J Bruce Ismay woke up at 11:40 pm. The sound passengers heard varied. Some heard the sound of a nail along metal. Other passengers described the sound as if the liner had been shaken twice. Then Ismay heard silence. The huge liner had stopped dead in it's course. Ismay's first thought was that the liner had lost a blade from one of it's propellers. Ismay got out of bed and put on his slippers. Then he opened his cabin door and began walking down the hallway. He noticed a steward. He walked up to him.
" What's happened?".
The steward frowned. " I don't know Mr Ismay".
Ismay returned to his room. He put on an overcoat and some black trousers over his pajamas.
Ismay left his cabin and walked up to the bridge. Then he saw Captain Smith.
" What's happened Captain Smith?".
" We struck a berg".
Ismay frowned. " Was the liner damaged?".
" I am afraid she is".
