Rameses II was the greatest of the Egyptian pharaohs. In sixty years, he had military successes and impressive building projects. He led Egypt into a period of creative prosperity. Rameses inherited the throne in 1279 BC. Rameses recorded the first peace treaty in history in 1258 BC. Rameses built huge monuments that are still standing today. He died in 1213 BC when he was in his 90's. After his death, Egypt went into decline.
