the Nine page 5 by ric gustafson
When Ronald Reagan was president, judges and lawyers found an agenda and a voice. These were the political goals of the conservative wing of the Republican Party.
One Chief Justice served from 1953 to 1969. His influence over American law was powerful and lasting. That Chief Justice was Earl Warren. Warren was appointed by Dwight D Eisenhower. Warren was a former California governor. Warren's agenda was to fight state sponsored racism.
Starting with Brown v Board of Education in 1954, for at least 12 years the justices fought against official segregation. Earl Warren's record on civil rights gave him moral authority.
Warren and William Brennan Jr pushed law in more liberal directions.
Earl Warren transformed American law. This included freedom of speech and the field of privacy.
