before Dorothy page 5 by ric gustafson
Cora walked into the bedroom. Emily had lot's of her sister's things on the bed. There was a little bit of everything. Clothes, glassware, tableware and books.
Cora smiled. " I could help you sort through all of this stuff". They began to sort. Most of it did not appeal to Emily. At one point, Emily lifted a tin man out of an old snuff box.
" I had forgotten all about him".
Cora stared at the little tiny man of metal. " Is that an axe he's holding?".
" Yes, he's a woodcutter".
" Did your father work at a steel factory?".
" Yes, he always said if you left him out in the rain, he would rust".
" How did your father die?".
" Factory fumes and smoke damaged his lungs". Emily sighed. " Father died during the influenza epidemic".
Cora took out a pair of silver shoes from a box. " Whose shoes were these?".
Emily grinned. " my sister's".
