7 churches: Smyrna by ric Gustafson
Jesus wrote a letter to the church in Smyrna. This was the proudest and most beautiful city in Asia. The city was built by the Greeks. The growing congregation was under pressure by the Romans. Christians were being killed for not worshiping Caesar. The young congregation was under pressure, persecution and poverty.
Jesus gave this fearful congregation two commands. He told them to be fearless. He also told them to be faithful. In Revelation 2:9, Jesus tells them that he knows their afflictions. A student and disciple of John came to be their pastor. His name was Polycarp. Later, this man of God became a martyr for Jesus. This church suffered for it's faith in God and Jesus.
