Joy: Philippians 1: 12-26

Joy: Philippians 1: 12-26 by ric gustafson

God often has hidden purposes in our adversity. While in prison, Paul had received a letter from the Philippi church. They were concerned about Paul because he was currently in prison. It's hard to believe that Paul would have joy after all that happened to him in Rome. On the way to Rome, there was a storm at sea. When he got to Rome, things got worse. He was insulted, shamed and almost beaten. He came in chains and had to wait for two years for an appeal.
From Paul's letter to the Phillipi church, we learn seven principles. Adversity promotes the progress of the Gospel. Paul did not discuss his personal discomfort. Adversity provides opportunity for witness. While in prison, Paul witnessed to the guards. Third, Adversity produces courage. Others saw Paul's courage. Fourth, Adversity proves character. Paul just wanted people to follow Christ. Fifth, Adversity provokes growth in our life. The ultimate goal is Christian maturity. Sixth, Adversity purifies our motives. For Paul, to live was Christ and to die was gain. Seven, Adversity prepares us to see life and death in perspective.
