On Jan 20 1961, eight inches of snow had fallen on Washington DC. Twenty thousand people endured the snow and cold to watch the special event in person. On television, 80 million Americans were watching.
At the Capitol Building, Chief Justice Earl Warren waited with a bible. Standing next to the. Warren gave Kennedy the Presidential Oath of Office. Kennedy had a refined manner of speaking and was born into wealth.
A lot of people loved Kennedy. Some did not. Kennedy won the popular vote by a razor thin margin over Richard Nixon. Next to now President Kennedy were three people close to him. The first was President Kennedy's brother Bobby. He became his brother's Attorney General. Next was the new Vice President Lyndon Johnson. The third was the President's wife Jackie Kennedy. Mrs Kennedy already had tragedy in the first seven years of their marriage. She lost her first two children. But then was blessed with a boy and a girl. Caroline and John Jr. With Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon and Harry Truman in appearance, the Secret Service was on high alert.
In his inaugural address, " ask not what your country can do for you". President Kennedy made a promise to the American people. " But what you can do for your country".
